Urban Grid AV (formerly Chesapeake Smart Homes) is an award-winning home electronics design and installation firm located near Annapolis, Maryland. Our service area includes the majority of the Middle Atlantic states. As one of the largest residential firms in the area, we have a substantial infrastructure, and invest heavily to expand our capabilities each year. Our 10,200 square foot facility includes over 6,600 square feet of showroom/office space and more than 3,600 square feet of warehouse and job-staging areas. We put a significant amount of emphasis on design, engineering, and planning, and as such have CAD and large format printing capabilities similar to those found in engineering and architecture firms.
UrbanGrid-AV was established in 2001, with the vision of quality and stability. In an industry where shops are opened and closed left and right, quality and stability couldn’t come fast enough. For UrbanGrid-AV, that day came in 2003 when the company was bought out by it’s current owner, Frank DePew. Frank brought fresh ideas, making the vision of quality and stability a reality for UrbanGrid-AV.
Have you ever taken your vehicle in to be serviced? You know that feeling you get when you walk out the door back to your car and you think to yourself, "What exactly did I just pay for?" We know how frustrating it can be to pay for parts or service for a purpose you may not fully understand.
At UrbanGrid-AV we want our clients to be able to make educated purchases when it comes to their home electronics and control system. We strive to explain your options in a way that makes sense to you, describing exactly how changes will affect your use of the system, not simply blurting out part requirements that may have no significance to you. At first thought, you may think that you don't want structured wiring in your home, but when you're shown the minuscule cost of versatile CAT5 in comparison to HDMI cables for video, it begins to make sense why we recommend running a few extra CAT5 cables throughout your house for future use.
In our Portfolio, you will be guided through several residential projects completed by Urban Grid. These photographs, and their descriptions, are designed to inspire ideas that you may find useful in your home.
It may also be helpful for you to visit some of the manufacturer websites listed under our Products section. This will give you an idea of some of the different products and solutions that are available to you. If you take the time to explore the possibilities, when you do schedule an appointment with us, you can be armed with a working knowledge of the terms and concepts that will be utilized in your home electronics design. With modern technologies, your only limit is your imagination. Let our talented design team help you realize the custom project of your dreams!
When the final coat of paint is on the walls; when the movers are finally out; when the builder hands over the keys; there is only one person that is going to have to live with the decisions made during the construction process - YOU!
During every project there are changes that inevitably occur. Often, this is brought on as our clients begin to realize the full potential of their control system, almost invariably adding services to integrate other aspects of their homes. We have included a list of key questions that you may want to think about before and after our first meeting together. Getting together with all parties involved in decision making and agreeing on key aspects of your project will cut down change orders tremendously. Often, these decisions only take a short amount of time to conclude, but planning ahead protects against scheduling or building conflicts that could cause delays in a project later on.
We want you to have an outstanding experience and be excited about the final results of your project. You can help us make that possible by taking some time and pondering the following questions. During your first meeting with us, we can show you real-world examples of these observations and product color palettes.
Of course, not all decisions have to be made right away. For example, the color of the keypads may not be essential, but it is possible that the color you may really want is not available in all styles of keypads. In this regard, a general idea of your home's décor would be beneficial.
All these topics will be discussed with your project designer, so don't get overwhelmed. We are here to help! This list is just to give you an idea of some things to think about.
Urban Grid is a full-service electronic design, consulting, and integration firm. From our perspective, the most important phase of every home automation project is during the design stage. We have watched capabilities of modern home automation technologies increase exponentially over the past decade, and new products are released daily. As a result of this rapid progress, we invest a great deal of time and resources to familiarize ourselves with new services to keep our staff trained. Armed with the latest knowledge, our designers are able to work most effectively to specify a system based on your needs, and within your budget.
We believe that our role is first one of educating the client so that they are able to make the proper choices to meet their requirements. These jobs invariably evolve as the client becomes more knowledgeable and fine tunes the installation to better meet his/her needs. It is imperative that before entering into an agreement that clients are able to experience homes with this technology as a basis for meaningful discussion while designing their system. This helps the client speak the same language as the designer they are working with. After a final design has been approved, together we develop and monitor a budget, and provide cost to complete analyses as the project progresses or changes in scale.
While not commonplace for residential construction, I feel that our way of doing business is superior, since the client is ultimately in control and makes informed decisions along the way. It is the professional approach to this industry and has boded well for both Urban Grid and our clients.
